Curricular Subjects
History
In St. Laurence's we feel that a broad and balanced understanding of history is essential if our children are to become confident, informed, critical and responsible members of society. The history curriculum offers many opportunities for the children to work as historians as they study the lives of people of the past.
We are fortunate to have a very rich historical environment within easy reach of the school. The study of buildings and common features of the locality allows us to develop the children's historical understanding in a very meaningful way.
Geography
The geography curriculum is concerned with developing the child's understanding and appreciation of the world in which he/she lives. During their time in St. Laurence's, the children will study a variety of human environments, beginning with their own homes and extending to include examples from a range of wider environments. They will also look at the natural environment, within their own locality and then beyond to regional, national, European and global contexts.
Science
St. Laurence's has a very active Science Programme and holds three awards for excellence in science. As well as implementing the Primary Science Curriculum, as laid down by the Dept. of Education and Science, teachers and pupils are involved in the Discover Primary Science Programme.
Our annual Science Open Day is one of the highlights of the school year when parents and friends are invited to come along and take part in a wide variety of science activities.
Children from 5th class can test out their engineering skills in the STEPS to Engineering Challenge. In recent years pupils from St. Laurence's have reached both regional and national finals. 5th class pupils also take part in the RINGO recycling project.
St. Laurence's regularly hosts speakers working in the science area and has held many workshops on Environmental Science. School trips to areas of scientific interest are also undertaken.
